A groom's guide to choosing the perfect engagement ring
By Emma Rowberry

Not sure what to expect when you need to choose the perfect ring for your bride to be? In this blog we walk you through the process you’ll embark on with your goldsmith to ensure a stress-free, surprise-filled journey to that big ‘yes’.
Step 1: The initial consultation
Your adventure begins with a personalised meeting at your goldsmith's workshop. Here, you'll discuss your vision for the ring, your budget, and your soon-to-be-fiancée's taste. Be open and honest about your budget – a skilled goldsmith can create a stunning ring that reflects both your love and financial commitment.
Step 2: Design and size
Now comes the fun part. Discuss styles you've noticed your partner likes. Does she love classic solitaires or does she prefer a vintage-inspired halo setting? Does her everyday style lean towards minimalist elegance or bold statement pieces?
This is also where the clandestine detective work begins. To ensure a perfect fit, you'll need to discreetly determine her ring size. Here are a few tips:
- Borrow a ring: Does your partner have a ring she wears on her ring finger (not her pinky) that you can borrow for an afternoon? Take it to the goldsmith for an accurate measurement.
- The friend approach: Enlist one of your partner’s close friends who knows her jewellery preferences. They might be able to subtly inquire about her ring size or take a peek at her jewellery box.
- The paper ploy: While she's asleep (or out of the room), gently wrap a thin piece of paper around the base of her ring finger (or a ring she often wears) and mark the spot with a pen. Measure the distance against a ruler.
Step 3: Bringing your vision to life
Based on your discussions, your goldsmith will create a computer-generated image of your ring design for you to approve. This allows you to visualise the piece in stunning detail and make any necessary adjustments before moving ahead with material sourcing and manufacturing.
Step 4: Sourcing the sparkly stuff
Once the design is finalised, your goldsmith will source the perfect stones and precious metals. Diamonds are graded using the 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight), so the goldsmith can guide you on options that fit your budget and prioritise the qualities most important to you.
Step 5: The masterpiece takes shape
With the stones and metal secured, the magic begins. Skilled artisans meticulously craft the ring according to your design. This process can take several weeks, so factor this into your planning.
Step 6: The setter's touch
A master setter, with years of experience and a steady hand, meticulously places the stone(s) into the ring's setting, ensuring a secure and beautiful fit.
Step 7: A touch of personalisation
If you want to make the ring even more special, consider adding a personal touch with some engraving. A hidden inscription on the inside of the band with your proposal date, a nickname, or a special message will add a layer of sentimental value she'll cherish forever.
Step 8: Your approval
Your goldsmith will let you know when your ring has been set, polished, and engraved. You’ll have a final opportunity now to approve your ring.
Step 9: Certificates and proof
For peace of mind, your goldsmith will provide a valuation certificate for insurance purposes. This document details the specifications of the diamond or gemstone, ensuring its authenticity and value. Additionally, professional photographs will capture the ring's brilliance in all its glory.
Step 10: The big moment awaits
Finally, your big day arrives. Your ring is gleaming, polished, and ready to be presented. Your goldsmith will ensure the ring is securely packaged in an elegant box ready for that heart-stopping moment.
Bonus tips for the stealthy groom
- Shop solo: While it can be tempting to take a friend with you for advice, avoid attracting unnecessary attention.
- Browse online (discreetly): Research ring styles online in private browsing mode to avoid targeted ads that might blow your cover.
- Social media savvy: Be mindful of your social media activity. Avoid liking or sharing any engagement ring-related content that might show up on your partner's feed.
- Maintain the mystery: If your partner usually accompanies you on errands, create a believable excuse for your solo trip to the goldsmith.
The proposal: Where hearts collide
With the ring secured, it's time to plan the perfect proposal. Choose a location that holds special meaning in your relationship – it could be where you first met or a spot with breathtaking scenery. The most important element? Your sincerity.
